Review

As you would expect from a Canonbury sponsored service all the basics have been properly covered and so the technical operation of the service is easy and straightforward. This is a win tipping service for horse racing in the UK offering in effect a daily nap but not feeling that a tip is necessary if there is nothing to suit. Selections are advised by email usually first thing on the morning of the race and may also be obtained from the member’s area of the website. An analysis of the previous day’s performance is also given.

The website available offers full details about the service including staking advice, past results and general tips on horse race betting. It is a very useful information base and pretty well all of the questions asked on the MMR thread were covered here. If all else fails read the instructions eh!

As I am on the Canonbury mailing list I saw the invitation to beta test the service and was accepted so my test has already covered 3 months not just the month that it has been on sale. I have therefore continued to record bets at 1 point level stakes for the purposes of the trial which will demonstrate the underlying strength of the service before staking plans are considered. I have also detailed performance with 1 point progressive staking on a separate tab.

In the full trial period we have seen 97 selections with 44 winning. A very creditable strike rate of 45% which I understand is a little below expectations! The longest winning run is 5 selections with the worst run 7 losers. Full details are shown in the spreadsheet attached.

At 1 point level stakes this has translated into a profit of 26.5 points or a return on stakes invested of 27% which is better than most similar services ever achieve and gives a very good start to things. Even at this low base level the subscription cost is covered on £10 stakes with some profit to spare – bank has increased by 132% in this time. If you follow the service advice and compound your stakes daily the profit is 34.8 points with the value of the initial point having increased by 162% and the bank by 174%. Some members have posted their own profit returns using the points based stakes and confirm the excellent performance on whichever plane you wish to assess it.

When the service is available for subscriptions again we suggest it is an offer that should be taken up. As with any such service future results cannot be guaranteed but the signs here are that everything has been done to give it the best possible chance.

Update 18/11/2013:

A month of further progress here with 25 selections of which 13 won. At level stakes the bank is now up by 172% and £10 stakes would have covered the subscription and left a small profit. Using the variable staking plan has seen a much greater return as highlighted by members on the thread.

We find it slightly strange that much of the thread is taken with comments about how the selections are derived which adds no real benefit to the assessment of performance and could undermine the newcomer’s confidence when what they are being offered is an ideal starter service. The suggested use of a national newspapers tipster has been well and truly shown as not being the case.

The debate on taking early or starting prices is more relevant and taken over all selections the average odds are all but the same. Just looking at the winners the average odds on advice are 2.61 and at BSP 2.71 so there is a marginal gain in waiting for the off.

We would also mention the service website which offers a great deal of generic advice for horse race betting as well as specifics for the service. Such depth of detail is rare and is a valuable resource for members of the service. We are sure that specific enquiries will also be answered by the authors with the same degree of care.

Our advice remains positive and we suggest that if you are looking for this type of service you should add your name to the waiting list. We will update again in December.

2. Review from The Betting Rant

Initial Details of the service

After joining you receive a Welcome email which gives you access to their website. This contains past results and F.A.Qs. The bets are sent out by email at around 8 a.m. each day and they are also available on the website. They have a Start Up Guide as a pdf on the site which explains the service but at the moment it is not downloading successfully. I’ll put more detail on here when I can access it.

The main strategy seems to be just one win bet each day and the bets are given with a variable stake of 2, 4, 7 or 12 points. Two point bets seem quite rare. They recommend using Betfair Win prices and these are what they use for the calculation of performance. Their website contains updated spreadsheets with all bets so far; there are two, one giving level stakes and the other using the variable stakes.

The trial will run for two months so let’s see if the claims can be substantiated. The bets are all linked to Betfair prices and we will monitor the profits/losses after deduction of Betfair’s 5% commission. We will monitor the performance for the recommended variable stakes and also level stakes.

Our Conclusion

So at the end of the two months we’ve had 44 bets with 24 winners for a strike rate of 54.5% which is good by anyone’s standards. Using the variable stakes that gives us 194.42 pts profit from a total outlay of 332 pts so that’s a ROI of 58.56% which is hard to find elsewhere. Using all the bets in this way makes this a very reliable and profitable service and the losing runs are short – five being the longest sequence.

The real strength of this service are the 12 pt Maximum bets. From 15 bets there were 13 winners and they produced a profit of 183.45 pts using the variable stakes. So for a total outlay of 180 pts they produced a ROI of 101.92 % which is very impressive indeed. No-one should complain about 86% winners being achieved.

Our Opinion

Definitely a service to consider for your betting portfolio. With generally one bet each day arriving in your Inbox, and website backup for the bets, it is easy to follow and get the bets on with Betfair. The 12 pt bets are excellent and ideal for those concerned about losing runs as in our trial there weren’t any. If I’m nitpicking, some of the bets are very short prices but that’s probably being unfair as if it wins consistently – who cares ? The service coped very well with the notoriously difficult changeover period from flat to jumps.

This is definitely a service that I will be continuing to follow for the future.
